Trailer-mounted loader
The Rol-Loader is basically a standard HIAB loader mounted on a self-powered roller chassis running along the twin joists that form the main members of an articulated trailer or semi-trailer. It can travel the entire length of the trailer platform; this, it is claimed. gives it maximum outreach and load capacity at any point.
Three standard HIAB models—the 173. 174 and 177 with capacities of up to three tons—can be fitted to the Rol-Loader chassis, and all can be equipped with rotator, pallet fork and special purpose grabs. clamps and grapples to handle bricks, concrete blocks, logs, sawn timber and other bulk freight and unit loads.
A separate diesel engine mounted on the chassis actuates an hydraulic pump. This transmits oil pressure to all hydraulic functions and to the hydraulic motor which propels the chassis wheels via a chain drive. All movements are controlled by the main hydraulic valve assembly which is mounted on the crane base at approximately waist height. The RolLoader chassis, however, must remain static when the crane is in operation.
The Rol-Loader with the HIAB 173 model weighs 2050Ib, and with the HIAB 174 model 2270Ib: both weights include the rotator.
The lifting capacity of the 174 model is as follows: 60cwt at 5ft 6in. radius; 39--cwt at 8ft 3in. radius; 294cwt at 10ft 10in, radius and 19i-cwt at 16ft Sin, radius. The lifting capacity of the 173 model is: 60cwt at 5ft 6in. radius; 42cwt at 7ft 6in. radius: 30cwt at 10ft 61n. radius and 241cwt at 13ft radius.
The hydraulic brick grab is made to standard George Cohen Machinery Ltd. design, and will handle both banded and unbanded bricks. Dimensions of this grab can be varied to suit customers' individual requirements.
Crane Fruehauf can supply trailers to the correct Rol-Loader specifications.
Marketed by: The George Cohen 600 Group Ltd Wood Lane, London, W 12.
Price: Rol-Loader (excluding specialized equipment) fitted with a model 173 HIAB is £1,755; with a model 174 HIAB £1,940. The brick grab is approximately £440.
Exhaust brake
An exhaust brake which does not restrict the exhaust passage when it is not in action has been introduced to the UK from Australia by Smiths Exhaust Brakes. The unit employs a sliding gate controlled either by an air pressure cylinder or alternatively by mechani cal means—it is claimed to be self cleaning, so obviating the problem of sticking. Four diameter sizes, are available, 2.5in., 3in., 3.5in. and 4in.
Where engines have double banks of cylinders two units are used operating in parallel with each other.
One of the special features of the SGV exhaust brake is that both the slide components, the body and the slide, are manufactured from the same ductile iron material which has great resistance to heat. As both components are manufactured from this material their expansion rates are the same and there is no tendency for irregular warping and consequent seizure.
The cross flow of gasses which occurs each time the valve is closed is claimed to keep the surface of the valve cleaned of carbon deposits. The makers say that the valve should never need to be cleaned, manually.
Installation kits are available for the vast majority of engines in service today from the UK distributor.

Air suspension seat
An air suspension seat is introduced to the UK by UOP Bostrom Manufacturing Co. Ltd. It will be seen for the first time at the Commercial Motor Show (Stand 318).
The main feature of the Bostrom Air Viking is the low pressure design which incorporates an air reservoir which increases captive air volume. Adjustment of an air valve allows the

driver to increase and decrease the air pressure in a rolling lobe air spring.
Properly adjusted (a check can be made against a visible indicator) the driver is suspended in the centre of a 4in. ride zone and the seat can move up or down 2in. when subjected to severe jolts. Air is used only during adjustment.
As with other Bostrom seats, a doubleaction shock absorber is incorporated for damping over rough road conditions. Also, the seat can be moved 4in. fore and aft and has three angle positions provided for the back cushion.

High-pressure cleaner
The latest addition to the range of high pressure washers by Flexion are of special interest to transport operators. The FH4 has an operating pressure of 1,250 psi. and a flow of 4 g.p.m. which enables an unskilled operator to clean an artic tractor to the standard required for MoT test purposes in less than 1 hr using cold water. Detergent or caustic cleaning-solutions may be pumped if a completely grease-free surface is required for repainting.
The power unit is a totally enclosed 5.5 hp three-phase electric motor. Drive is through a toothed belt which requires no adjustment. The pump unit is a four-cylinder version of the well known FH2A pump. It will run dry without wear and will self prime from a 6ft head. Frost will not damage the casing. No regular maintenance is required. The FH.4 is mounted on a two wheeled trolley with detachable handle and may be easily moved by the operator. The frame is finished in hard wearing corrosion resistant plastic coating. Liquid wax polish
Following the introduction of its car cleaning product—GT Wax—Simoniz Ltd., are now to supply the polish in liquid form.
Liquid GT Wax blends in chemically with paint finishes. The wax ingredient, claimed to be unique, is the basis of a Simoniz patent. Also incorporated in the product is a cationic emulsifier which changes chemically and becomes water and detergent resistant as soon as the polish is applied to vehicle bodywork.
Other advantages claimed for Simoniz Liquid GT Wax is that it resists the most powerful detergent soaps encountered in the variety of vehicle cleaning techniques used by automatic washes.
The wax enables a vehicle to be washed many times without destroying the protective film and shine, and may be used in the sun and shade. Simoniz say new acrylic and melamine finishes can be adequately pro tected from corrosion with Liquid GT Wax, one coat of which is claimed to give protection for a full year or more under normal driving conditions.
The polish takes only 20 min to apply to a 5cwt van and will remove road tar and insects with ease.

Heat exchanger
A heat exchanger system in which standard elements are built up by the user to produce the exact cooling power required, has just been introduced by the Hydrovane Compressor Co. Ltd. of Redditch. The standard elements, called cooler plates, are each made from two flat, pressed-steel rings welded together. Coolant is circulated under pressure through passageways stamped into the rings before assembly. Up to 30 cooler plates can be stacked together to form a compact heat exchanger capable of dissipating 48,000 Btu/h.
Two sizes of cooler plates are available: 13.7in. diameter with nominal heat dissipation rate of 500 Btu/h and 19.5in. with a rate of 1600 Btu/h. Both sizes are 0.2in. thick and when stacked have an air gap of 0.07in. between plates. Cooler plates are suitable for use with a variety of fluids, including oil and water, at working pressures up to 100 psi. Sealing between successive cooler plates when stacked is by permanent nylon inserts.
Potential applications for cooler plates include oil coolers for engines and gearboxes, pumps and compressors, radiators for rotary engines and welding machines and as variable capacity heat exchangers in research and development establishments. The large surface area of each cooler plate results in a particularly compact heat exchanger—a typical example is 6in. long. 19.5in, diameter dissipating 48,000 Btu/h. The ability to run a drive-shaft down the centre of the heat exchanger makes for further space saving in installations where the cooler plates can be sandwiched between two machines—an electric motor driving an oil-cooled compressor for example. Modular construction makes for simple repair by replacing the damaged element in the case of leakage.
The unit was originally developed as an oil cooler for Hydrovane rotary air compressors and one million are already in use throughout the world. The delivery of Hydrovane cooler plates can be made from stock.
