Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The new turbocharged version of the Ford 360 cu.in. diesel engine announced last week has been made an option to the Cummins V8, 170 bhp gross diesel in the Ford D1000 range of trucks and tippers. The Turbo 360 develops 150 bhp gross at 2,400 rpm and a maximum gross torque of 349 lb.ft. at 1,800 rpm. It will not be available in D1000 24and 28-ton-gross combination weight tractive units where the 185 bhp gross version of the Cummins V8 will be retained.

There are minor changes to the D1000 chassis and transmission when the turbocharged engine is fitted. One of these is the use of a 13in. diaphragm spring clutch instead of the twin-plate clutch fitted with the Cummins engine. The Turner T5-4008 wide-ratio synchromesh gearbox continues as standard with a single-speed rear axle but the axle-ratio choice is altered. And when an Eaton 18802 two-speed axle is fitted it goes with the Turner T5-4007 five-speed close-ratio box and again the ratio options are altered. The Eaton 19800 two-speed axle-an option with the Cummins-is not available with the turbocharged diesel.

As well as the new power-unit option Ford has made other changes to the D1000 rigids. An extra-long wheelbase is introduced and the range of dimensions modified. Tipper chassis are the same with wheelbases of 10ft 8in. (limited to 15 tons gross) and 12ft 3m. But the existing 12ft 3irt. platform chassis has been discontinued and bodies up to 14ft 9in. long will in future be accommodated on the 12ft 3in. tipper chassis. The longest wheelbase now is 19ft 6in. which cart take 24ftlong bodies. Intermediate wheelbases are 13ft 3in. (16ft long bodies), 14ft llin. (18ft 6in.) and 17ft 2in. (22ft).

With the introduction of the new wheelbases, Ford has increased frame strength and front-axle capacity. The frames are still made of medium-tensile-steel pressings without flitch plates and the added strength has been achieved by increasing the side-member depth from 10.63in. to 12in. The D1000 tractive unit frame sizes are unchanged.

The new front axle has a capacity of 7 tons as against 6.3 tons and is used on the rigids, the 28-ton-gross tractive unit and the 24-tongross tractive unit for use with single-axle semi-trailers but the 24-ton-gross tractive unit for tandem-axle trailer operation retains its 4.25-ton-capacity front axle. The heavier axle is also to be standard on the DT 1400 sixwheelers announced last week.

Beam material has been improved and hearing sizes increased for the new axle and it is also slightly wider with the track increased from 76.1in. to 78.6in. Wider wings on the cab to accommodate this increase give a new overall width of 7ft 10in, as against 7ft 6.2 Sin, on the older design.

Estimated kerb weights for the D1000 rigids with the turbocharged 360 cu.in. engine and frame and axle changes range from 4.2 tons for the 10ft 8in.-wheelbase model to 4.6 tons for the 19ft 6in.-wheelbase version.
