• ft was stated in Newcastle upon Tyne last week that the cost of two double-deck buses could not be covered by the present reserves of South Shields Corporation's transport department.

After hearing that reserves had fallen to £11,842, the Northern Traffic Commissioners sanctioned the increase of the present 4d, 5d, 6d and 7d fares by Id from August 29.

Mr. L. Rumney, for the corporation, said that the last fares increase had been in May, 1967, but this had yielded only /10,000 instead of an anticipated £23,000.

Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, chairman of the Commissioners, said that Northern General Transport and the Sunderland and District Omnibus Company, operating on joint routes with the corporation, should bring their fares into line with the new South Shields scale.
