• When Mr. R. Jackson, the Licensing Authority for the South Wales traffic area, opened the BRS driving school at Bridgend yesterday he was in fact launching a pilot scheme.
The Bridgend school is located within the company's traffic depot and will cater for the entire South Wales area. The experience gained by BRS at Bridgend will be used to established other similar schools at main centres throughout Great Britain. Since this school has been designed on the basis of other similar establishments few modifications, if any, are anticipated in future projects.
The course will cater for six drivers on two-week cycles. When necessary the course will be residential but this is not expected to be a regular requirement.
In the initial stages BRS is to concentrate on preparing drivers for the heavy goods vehicle driving licence tests and is aiming at advanced driver training. Later it will train light goods vehicle drivers for the heavier grades. The subjects covered include driving technique, company documentation, the legal aspects as they affect the driver, and mechanical familiarization.
The school will employ one instructor who has had a course of instructor tuition with the Road Transport Industry Training Board and has also completed a course at Harold Wood and Sons Ltd., Heckmondwike. Tuition will be available on articulated and rigid vehicles.
