The Government has ordered a Prices and Incomes probe into the recent pay deal for 2,500 British Road Services maintenance workers.
The deal, reached between BRS and four unions (AEF. ETU, TGWU and Vehicle Builders) provided for pay increases ranging from £2 to 13s 4d a week-13.5 per cent to 5.3 per cent—in return for acceptance of certain principles relating to productivity.
The maintenance men's last increase was in July 1967.
But the reference to the Incomes Board does not mean a total "freeze" on the settlement. The Government has ruled that it will not object to an interim increase of not more than 3 per cent being paid immediately on condition that it is absorbed into any further rises resulting from the Incomes Board findings.
