THE Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners last week granted an application by J. Broadbent (Motors), Ltd., York, to operate work people's services from Stamford Bridge to York, Pocklington and Mallon for Derwent Plastics, Ltd., Stamford Bridge, who acquired Broadbent's last month.
The services had been run since 1940 by Mr. J. Broadbent and the application was consequent upon the incorporation of the applicant concern. Mr. J. Bailey, Stamford Bridge, objected to the applicants serving Pocklington. He said that he was losing money in maintaining his services.
Mr. L. R.. Cornelius, a director of the Derwent and Broadbent companies, said that until-the acquisition of the applicants, Derwent had arranged with Mr. 'Broadbent to carry their workpeople and -no deductions had been made from the wages of persons carried. It had now been decided, however, to deduct contributions, because Derwent were faced with rising costs.
NINE SCAMMELL,S FOR UNION CARTAGE
BEING built• by Scammell Lorries, Ltd., to the order of University Commercials and Coachworks, Ltd., nine medium-duty tractors are to be supplied to the Union Cartage Co., Ltd., to carry container-loads of meat on Crane 10-ton drawbar trailers. The design incorporates special features to meet the users' exacting needs.
The engine specified is a 94-b.h.p. unit driving through a six-speed gearbox. Normally, the tractor-trailer combinations will hive air-pressure braking, but provision will be made on the tractors so that they can be used with trailers equipped for vacuumservo brakes.
The vehicles will be employed to carry meat from ports in the south to London depots, and from there to provincial depots. About 500 tons of meat is being handled each day.
A PASSAGE TO INDIA LAST Saturday, Mr. 0. J. Garrow1-1 Fisher, of Garrow-Fisher Tours, 98 Victoria Street, London, S.W.1, left Victoria Coach Station, London, for Bombay, following his 20,000-mile journey to Calcutta and back earlier this year (The Commercial Motor, August 9). He is driving an A.E.C.Harrington Regal Mark III, and is scheduled to arrive in Bombay on October 4.
CONTAINERS ON SHOW A GENERAL traffic container for PA 10-ton loads and a 6-ton insulated meat container are to be shown by British Road Services at the International Container Bureau Exhibition at the Utrecht Fair, Holland, from September 3-12.
