mittee decided to. press the city council to replace the tramways by a' trolleybus service, at an estimated cost of £244,000.

Mr. J. Lawson, acting . general manager, stated that the continuance of the tramways would involve complete reconstruction of the permanent way and the renewal of rolling stock. He recommended the -introduction of trolleybiises. He also advocated the --replacement of trams on a certain mute by petrol-engined or oil-engined buses.

He estimated that the conversion would bring in receipts totalling £200,000, and, with estimated expenditure at £175,596, a surplus of £24,404 would be available. When loan charges of £26,845 were, however, taken into consideration, there would be a net loss of £2,441.

The proposed conversion, which was opposed by the Lord Mayor, Alderman A. Stark, and upheld by Mr. C. Hurley, chairman of the transport committee, would take about four years to complete.

"UNITED COUNTIES" DISPUTE OVERTURES.

ANEW effort to reach a settlement in the dispute between employees of the United Counties Omnibus Co., Ltd., and the management was made last week, when the company submitted amended terms to the workers. The new proposals are being considered.

Fishwick are also seeking licences granted to Mr. W. Parkinson and Ribble Motor Services, Ltd. The Ribble concern is also applying for the transfer of licences held by Messrs. J. Fishwick and Sons and Messrs. J. and R. Singleton.

L.N.E.R.'s HISTORICAL RESEARCH.

A COMPLAINT that, owing to bus

competition, the number of persons using the railway in the Asbington area had fallen by 70,000 per annum since 1913 was made by Mr. E. F. Wilkinson, for the London and North Eastern Railway Co., when United Automobile Services, Ltd., made a successful application for the modification of the licence for the Ashington-Stakeford service. The application was for the removal of a condition which prevented duplicate buses from picking up passengers between these points.

UNITY IN NORTHERN AREA.

AS announced in last week's issue, the Northern Road Transport Owners Association will, on Sunday (September 1), become merged with the Associated Road Operators. We learn that, in addition to undertaking organizing work on the goods and passenger sides, Mr. R., G. Hunter, . secretary of the N.R.T.O.A., will continue to actas Secretary of the passenger section of the Association in the Northern Area.

MORE Q-TYPES FOR LONDON TRANSPORT.

LONDON' Transport has recently La placed an order with the Associated Equipment Co., Ltd., for 80 Q-type single-deck buses for work on country services. The Board has ordered 180 vehicles of this class within a year, which points to the suitability of the type for meeting the conditions prevailing in the outer districts of the area served by the undertaking. Like the earlier units, all these Q-type buses will be powered by the A.E.C.-Ricardo oil engine.
