THE Northern Ireland Minister cf Home Affairs has, in accordance with the provisions of Section 1 of the Northern Ireland Road and Railway Transport Att. 1935, appointed the following members to constitute the Road Transport Board:—Mr. D. L. Clarke, 0.B.E., Assistant Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, to be chairman of the Board, the Earl of Enniskillen and Messrs. James R. Haslett, Samuel G. Houghton, David Wilson Smyth, DL., Robert H. Smyth, DL., and James E. Wilson, to be part-time members.

The only whole-time appointment is that of chairman. The main burden of the administration of the Board will fall upon Mr. Clarke and the technical staff, to be appointed by the Board. The staff will, in accordance with the terms of the Act, be recruited from those already engaged in the industry, and the Board will have the assistance of the experienced staffs which have hitherto carried on transport in the province.

All the members appointed to the Board are well-known Ulstermen, who have distinguished themselves either in business or in public service. The Earl of Enniskillen is a member of the House of Lords and has, since the war, taken a great interest in the public affairs of his native County Fermanagh.

Mr. Haslett, who is a chairman of the Logan Navigation Co., Ltd., has made a special study of transport conditions throughout the world. He is chairman of the transport committee of the Belfast Chamber of -Commerce. Mr. Haughton is a director of the famous linen Concern of Frazer and Houghton, Ltd., Cullybackey, Co. Antrim. Another member associated with the linen industry is Mr. D. W. Smyth, director of Smyth's Weaving Co., Ltd., Banbridge, and director of Belfast Ropeworks, Ltd.

Mr. Robert Smythis a director of Robert Smyth and Sons, Ltd., a concern of flour-millers with extensive mills in Londonderry and Strabane, as well as chairman of the Londonderry Port and Harbour Commissioners. Mr. Wilson is governing director of the Ormeau Bakery, Ltd., Belfast, one of the largest and most progressive bakeries in Ireland.
