A Tractor-tanker Equipped to Carry Margarine in a Liquid State.

ALTHOUGH the tank wagon was originally introduced for the transport of motor spirit and oil in bulk, it has of recent years been put to a variety of other uses, and such machines are now to be found in daily service conveying supplies of milk, beer and other commodities in specially constructed bodies.

One of the latest applications of the tank wagon is suggested-bythe illustration of 'a tractor, tanker which we reproduce on this page. This machine, the prime mover of which is a Leyland chassis, has recently. been supplied to the Co-operative Wholesale Society, Ltd.,of Higher Irlam, for the ex

press purpose of. conveying liquid • margarine.

• The welded cylindrical tank, which has a Capacity of. 2,500 gallons, is the product of the wellknown tank 'manufacturer, Thompson Bros. (Bilston), Ltd., of Brad

Icy, Bilston. It has an internal diameter of 5'ft. I in., and a length of 20 ft. The barrel .plate is of A in. thickness and the dished ends of in. thickness. The tank -is equipped internally with "a heating -coil, „ in order that the wargarine can be retained in a liquid state during the time that it being carried from the docks to the works of the user, a

circulating pump being used in connection viith the hot-water system. The water, it should be mentioned, is heated by a Special jacketed silencer.

Externally the tank is lagged with 2-in. cork lagging, being finished with hard-setting cement • and covered with galvanized steel sheeting. Steel feet are fitted to angle irons, which pass round the tank, and the feet are secured to the chassis of the semi-trailer attachment by means of long bolts and death, rubber packing being inserted between the steel feet and the frame members, There is a 3-in, outlet cock at the rear. Certain other constructional details can be seen.

We should not forget to mention that the semi-trailer portion of the outfit is the product of the Eagle Engineering Co., Ltd., of Warwick.
