ships -Iat Tilbury to eater for the remarkable expansion of the traffic of the Transport Ferry Service to and from Continental ports, are nearing completion and are expected to start operating in the autumn. They are part of the £6m. lirct stage of the Port of London Authority's big development scheme in the port.
Lorries will be able to drive straight into the ships' holds and electric cranes on the quayside will lift containers on to the decks. The new berths will supplement the one existing berth catering for this type of traffic. The new dock, which will also contain Iwo other deep water berths for general cargo ships equipped with fully mechanized cargo handling, has now been flooded. The transit sheds serving the deep water berths will each be 550 ft. long with a 150 ft. clear span. The loading banks, which run the whole,length of the rear of the sheds and their ends, will be protected by a 50 ft.-wide canopy cantilevered out from the shed to provide all-weather working for both road and tail traffic. The quays will be served by 10 new electric quay cranes costing 125,000 each.
