Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

" Will you please suggest the best method of quoting for the haulage of sand in 4-ton loads over distances of 1 mile to 15 miles? I have quoted 3s. 6d. per ton for 15 miles, but cannot calculate for myself how I should assess the rate for short distances."

To some extent, your charges must depend upon the time which you spend in loading and unloading. We have taken as the basis a total of 1 hour for the two operations. The actual time may be less if you load by chute and

• mload by tipping. On the other hand, it often happens that, whatever the process of loading or unloading, one has to wait one's turn. On that basis, you should charge at least 1s. per ton for the first mile and add 1d. per ton per mile for each succeeding mile. Your charge of 3s. 6d. per ton for 13 miles is insufficient.
