" What would be the cost of hauling a load on a 21-ton vehicle over a lead of 250 miles (returning empty), making in all a journey of 500 miles? The time taken for loading and unloading is 21 hours."
We calculate that the work specified in your letter will take two full days and a little overtime. On that basis the net cost of operating the vehicle, including provision for 3s. overtime payment and 5s. for allowance for the man being away from home, will be £8 15s. You should note that the foregoing is the bare cost of operation. If you are going to quote for this work you should ask at least £1.1; actually, £12 would be quite a fair price to charge for the job.
