Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

" What do you consider to be a fair allowance to make to a commercial traveller using an 8 h.p. car running approximately 500-700 miles per week? He himself is buying the car. We consider that an overall allowance of £2 per week would suffice; alternatively, should we allow him, say, id. per mile?"

Having in mind the mileage which is to be covered, we would suggest, in the first place, that the car should be replaced annually. In those circumstances, 1d. per mile would nearly cover the cost of operation. This calculation is based on the following assumptions :—There would be a drop of £40 in the exchange and 110 would be necessary to cover sundry maintenance and tyre expenditure. Petrol and oil would be covered by Id. per mile and the foregoing, plus tax and insurance, calculated on the basis of 600 miles per week, totals 1d. per mile_ /2 per week would be insufficient.
