A 'decision has, we understand, been made by the four railway companies to apply to the Railway Rates Tribunal' for permission to increase railway freights and fares by 5 per cent. The railways are entitled under Section 59 of the Railways Act of 1921 to apply for permission to -increase rates, so long as their revenues fall below the standard revenues defined by the Act.
The railways have, it is said, refrained from seeking to raise rates owing to the keenness of road competition and the belief that they would lose traffic. It is now felt that, in view of the marked trade recovery and the widely different conditions which exist in road and rail itransport, a small increase in charges will be effective.
