A Useful Valve-grinder.

For an internal-combustion engine to develop its maximum of power, it is, of course, necessary that the inlet and exhaust valve seatings should be absolutely gas-tight. The ensuring of this essential

characteristic by tia periodic grinding in cf the valves in the long-run, well repay the user for trouble undertaken in this respect. A valve-grinding tool which has recently come before our notice is the " Unique," introduced by Markt and Co. (London), Ltd., 98-1C0. Clerkenwell load, London, RC. It has been designed to minimize as much as possible the amount of labour usually expended in valve-grinding.

The " Unique " is a simple and effective tool, possessing several good points ; it is light and handy, and, moreover, takes up very little room, as will be seen from our illustration herewith. The movement cif the grinding-spindle is automatic and regular, and one complete revolution of the crank imparts to the valve-IL-older and alternating rotary movermmt, causing the valve to revolve about two-thirds of a turn in each direction. This particular movement has been found to give the best results. The necessary gearing to effect this is enclosed in a dust-proof casing of polished aluminium, the gears and bit being made of high-grade forged steel. The company also supplies a carefully-selected grinding compound ready for immediate use with the tool.

Dunlcp Solid Rubber Tires, Testimony as to the increasing use of motor vehicles for commercial purposes may. be observed any day in the week at the Dunlop Rubber Co.'s works, Belsize Road, Kilburn, London, N.W. Since -this factory was opened, Just about a year ago, this solid tire department has developed with remarkable steadiness, the stall and plant having been considerably increased.

Despite the pressure, orders are completed with a Punctuality that is most gratifying to customers, and as the work is got through speedily, no customer need fear interruption of his regular routine owing to delay in fitting or repairing tires. Solids can be repaired as effectively as pneumatics. Indeed, damage of any kind to the band will be remedied the same day as received at a trifling cost.

Commercial Vehicle Lighting.

For a lighting-set to afford the user all-round satisfaction it is important, after general efficiency has been considered, to see that the installation will be favourable in relation to cost of upkeep.

The "PA." system of lighting is already used to aremarkable extent throughout the pleasure-car industry ; it is now adapted for use on commercial vehicles, in order to meet the demand made for a reliable, yet inexpensive installation. The Acetylene illuminating Co., Ltd., 263, South Lambeth Road, London, S.W., the manufacturer of this particular system, claims that the reliability of this type is mainly attributed to its simplicity, inasmuch as there are no complex parts to get out of order. There is no carbide container utili7.ed, involving frequent attention as regards cleaning and refilling. The apparatus. moreover, cannot be put out of working order by freezing up. The cylinder contains only pure gas and is con nected to the lamps through a combined pressuregauge and regulator, which comprises the only working parts of the apparatus. The gas is thoroughly purified before being compressed, the result being a clear white flame with no unpleasant odour. In addition to head, side, and tail lamps, the service pipes can be connected to interior lights and overhead signs. The gas cylinder can be fitted in any convenient position, and it may be stored for any length of time without leakage or deterioration or the contents.

We understand that the " D.A." system is already being used by haulage concerns, mail van and removal contractors, all of whom testify to the all round efficiency of this particular type of installation.
