Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Pay deals are being hammered out for operating staff in London Buses' subsidiary companies, with five agreements concluded to date. In the first pay round to be negotiated at company level, London Central and London General have settled on a 9.3% rise, Selkent drivers have accepted 9.2%. All three increases are payable from mid-June with an 8% increase backdated to March.

Staff who joined after the settlement date will not get the increase until next year.

South London drivers and conductors have accepted a 9.3% rise for the 12 months from May 5, but in 1992 the pay calendar will revert to April.

Pay talks are still on at CentreWest, Leaside, Metroline and London Forest: London United and London Northern are waiting for the results of ballots by operating staff.

LBL personnel director John Ingleton says the settlements vindicate the decision to decentralise the pay negotiations.

1=1 A Go-Ahead Northern drivers' ballot on local pay and condition negotiations was cancelled last week — a meeting with the management is now being sought by the Transport and General Workers' Union.
