Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• a's first secondary gearbox-mounted retarder is now available in the UK.

The "competitively priced" device, which was unveiled at the Frankfurt show last year reduces the strain on brakes when slowing sharply, weighs 69kg and can be fitted within the existing gearbox casing, says ZF.

Primary retarders, which have been made by ZF for several years, are placed between the engine and gearbox and are governed by engine speed.

The secondary retarder, which is mounted on the rear of the gearbox, is more efficient and reacts quicker because it is controlled by road speed and the propshaft, says ZF.

Trucks which use a's Ecosplit (for heavier tractive units) and Ecomid gearboxes, can have the retarder fitted — they include the Leyland Daf 95 Series and Constructor, Iveco Ford Turbostar and ERF 10 as well as some lveco Ford Cargos and MANs.

ZF says that other advantages of the retarder are that it can be fitted as one unit by the vehicle manufacturer; the same propshaft can be used and standard steering pump drives can be installed.

It is controlled by a hand lever, and has six levels of braking torque.
