Volvo reveals new gas-fuelled tractor

VOLVO PROVIDED A sneak preview of its latest gas-fuelled FM artic last weekend at the Elmia Truck Show in Sweden, ahead of this month's IM Exhibition in Hannover.

The 460hp, 6x2 tractor was built in Gothenburg with a conversion kit provided by UK gas-fuelling system supplier Clean Air Power. Methane is stored as liquefied natural gas (LNG) in a 300-litre tank and injected as a gas/ air mixture into the intake manifold before being ignited in the combustion chamber by a 'pilot charge' of diesel injected into the cylinder.

Under normal conditions, between 50% and 80% of the diesel fuel is substituted by the cheaper LNG, and when the gas runs out. the FM's 13-litre engine operates as a conventional diesel.
