East Yorks hauliers warn Hull road is not fit for HMIs

chris.tindattfarbi.co.uk HAULIERS IN EAST Yorkshire warn that a heavily congested stretch of the A63 in Hull is not fit for purpose after a spate of accidents left one cyclist dead and HGVs shedding their loads.

The latest incident, in which a Musgrave Transport lorry rolled over after taking evasive action to avoid a car on a roundabout near the docks, has renewed calls for the Highways Agency (HA) to carry out a review Despite improvements being made to the main thoroughfare in to the city seven years ago, there are calls for the roundabouts and traffic lights to be changed after fears that they are contributing to accidents. Hull-based AR Lunn Transport says a number of its vehicles have been written off on the road and its insurance premiums have risen.

MD Andrew Lunn says: "It can be clearly seen on sections of each roundabout that the cambers change quickly from one side to the other, which will not help a fully-laden vehicle with an unknown centre of gravity that could potentially be high."

Martin Roberts, transport manager at Beverley-based Musgrave Transport. says: "There's a bad conglomeration of traffic lights, which delays the flow of traffic and consequently creates a jam. There's a significant volume of traffic that the road can't cope with. There's a bit of animosity between car drivers and lorry drivers; sadly it's brought to bear on local hauliers."

Hull City councillor Sean Chaytor says it has urged the HA to tackle the problem. "People have died, people have been injured and there's been damage to property. We have a serious problem here, it needs to be reviewed."

An HA spokesman says: "The HA is planning a meeting to discuss the recent incidents on the A63 and will be contacting relevant organisations in the near future to set this up."
