by Kathy Watson • Kent County Council is to catch overloaded trucks using weight-triggered roadside cameras.

In a pilot scheme due to be launched early next year, Kent will become the first local authority in the UK to combat the rising number of overloaded vehicles with surveillance cameras and sensor pads built into the road.

The pads will be set to activate the cameras when they are crossed by vehicles over a predetermined weight.

The council has not decided what the weight levels will be set at, but says it plans to target "grossly overloaded vehicles", particularly those registered abroad.

In the past, some overseas drivers have claimed ignorance of the UK rules on loads.

In 1992 Kent County Council investigations over a threemonth period indicated that over half of all foreign trucks and a third of all UK trucks on its roads were overloaded.
