The British Customs must also make it their aim to improve their service. CM has found (see page 4) thai the average normal delay at Dover's Eastern Docks is now a staggering 24 hours for incoming vehicles.
And comparison with German Customs posts revei that it takes twice as long for a haulier to leave Britain with a laden vehicle as it does to enter Germany with the same vehicle and load.
This disparity is something that must be put right quickly. Hauliers, for their part, need to ensure that al drivers destined for the Continent have a comprehensive briefing. The road transport industry i not blameless on that score (see "Continental paper chase-, page 86).
