NEW MODELS FOR THE SHOW THIS YEAR

TWO new models will, be exhibited by Dennis Bros. Ltd. at the Commercial Motor Show. These are the Pax 22 tractive unit for 22 tons gross train weight and a Maxim 28-ton-g.t.w. tractive unit fitted with a Perkins V8 engine and all-synchromesh gearbox. The Pax 22 follows the general design of this Dennis range and has the composite timber and steel cab. A 120b.h.p. Perkins 6.354 diesel is used and this drives through a Dennis "U"-type gearbox.

A two-speed hypoid-bevel-and-helicalgear double-reduction axle is standard and the brake design incorporates a secondary system which is a complete duplication of the main system.

Triple-diaphragm chambers are fitted at all axles and the pressure in the secondary side of these follows up that in the service diaphragms through a biased foot valve to take over in the event of failure in the normal system. A hand-reaction valve is supplied to actuate the semi-trailer brakes only, and the mechanical handbrake on the driving axle is air-assisted.

Use of the V8.510 engine which produces 170 b.h.p. is not new to Dennis, who featured a six-wheeler with this unit at the last Scottish Show. But this is the first time that the company has applied the engine to a tractive unit and with it the gross train weight of the model is set at 28 tons. When the Perkins V8 is fitted to the Dennis Maxim a Turner five-speed, all-synchromesh gearbox is used instead of the Dennis box used when the Cummins V8 is employed. Forward ratios in the Turner box arc 7.36, 4.73, 2.79, 1.66 and 1 to 1 and in all other respects the design is as the standard Maxim with brakes as the Pax 22, a high-quality plastics cab and so on.

Other vehicles which Dennis intend to show at Earls Court include a Pax V sixwheeled low-loader and a 17ft. 5in. fourwheeler, while on the demonstration park the company plans to show a Maxim 6 x 4 unit with an Australian Fowler Rex 6 cu.yd. concrete mixer.
