The Minister of Transport, Mrs. Barbara Castle, is to present an International Road Federation award to the United States federal highway administrator, Rex M. Whitton, in London next month. Mr. Whitton, who is responsible for supervising the 41,000-mile inter-state highway programme, has been named IRF "Man of the Year". The award is made annually by the Federation for outstanding service in national and international road development.

A. J. Butterfield has retired from the chairmanship of W. P. Butterfield Ltd. and has been elected the company's second president—his cousin, the late Clifford Butterfield, having been the first. He is succeeded as chairman by R. M. Davenport, already a director of the company, who is chairman and managing director of Shelvoke and Drewry Ltd.

Jesse Harry Hooper has been appointed joint managing director of Armstrong Patents Co. Ltd. with effect from September 12. He is joining Armstrong after long experience in the automotive industry with Rootes, Ford and Perkins.

A. J. Peppiatt has assumed overall responsibility for reliability and quality control at all three manufacturing plants of Vauxhall Motors Ltd. at Luton, Dunstable and Ellesmere Port and is now a member of the company's management committee. Mr. Peppiatt has been in charge of quality control at Luton and Dunstable since the company's enlarged quality and reliability programme came into effect in 1961.

J. B. Reardan has been appointed export manager of Standard-Triumph International Ltd. Mr. Reardan has spent most of his working life with Standard-Triumph and almost entirely on the export side of the business. He was formerly sales administration manager.

Mr. W. G. Widnall, national chairman of the Industrial Transport Association, accompanied by Mr. A. H. Hart, national treasurer, began his rounds of the divisions last week when he addressed the members of Forth division in Edinburgh. Mr. Widnall stressed the importance of the Industrial Transport Association in the field of C-licence operation.

William Pearson has been appointed a director of Nu-Swift International Ltd. and NuSwift Industries Ltd. and has resigned his associate directorship of the former company. He has now assumed complete control and management of the home sales department of Nu-Swift International, Frank Tompkins, formerly home sales director of Nu-Swift International, has relinquished control of the home sales department, but remains a director of both companies.

John Bedford has been appointed sales manager of Eastbourne Motors Ltd., Ford main dealers. Two new appointments to the board directors of AEC Ltd. are announced. They J. R. Leitch, and D. K. Roberts. Mr. Leitch. ss is appointed director and secretary, has been et nected with AEC for 36 years. For the first years he was engaged by the company's audit' until in 1950 he joined the Associated Cornmerc Vehicles Group as comptroller. Mr. Robei aged 39, becomes director and chief engine He joined AEC as diesel engineer in 1957 a became assistant chief engineer in 1961. Roberts is on the engine committees of I SMMT and the BSI and is leader of the delegati to the ISO.

Danny Davenport, works manager at El Ltd. for the past six years and who joined company within weeks of its formation in 19 recently retired. Cyril Acton, formerly II Davenport's assistant, has taken over as wol manager. He joined ERF in 1947.

Alan Rudolph Starkey has been appoini technical director of Wingard Ltd. An ex-Jagt apprentice, Mr. Starkey joined Wilmot-Breec as a production engineer, was later general woi manager for Wellworthy and rejoined Wilm Breeden as divisional manager in Birrningha Wingard Ltd. also announces the appointment Douglas James Cunningham, as chief engine Mr. Douglas has held a position in the des and research department of the Rover Car ( Ltd. arid had previously served with the Ausi Brockhouse and Wilmot-Breeden compani among others.

A. D. Perry has been appointed assistant sa manager, transport industries division, Diversey (UK) Ltd. He joined the compa early in 1964 as a salesman.
