DDRESSING Stockport Rotarians PArecently, Mr. George Beckett, transport manager of Darwen Corporation, said that the community would benefit only if passenger transport services were made more frequent, better and safer vehicles were used to reduce the time taken per journey, and charges were reduced.
Unless these things are to be brought about, I do not see the wisdom of the change?' he added.
He said it should first be demonstrated that the proposed nationalized services would confer benefits on passengers, workprople and manufacturers of equipment. It would have to be more flexible, providing increased efficiency and production per man hour, and a reduction in unit cost.
Mr. Beckett did not claim that the present system was perfect, but said that the difficulties of co-ordinating services, increasing inter-running and producing standard fare tables could be solved if municipalities conferred together. If the final solution was left until after the changeover, there would be nothing but continual trouble, unrest and dissatisfaction.
