Farrimond Models For Pay-loads From I Ton to 20 Tons

ANEWCOMER amongst trailermanufacturing concerns is Thomas Farrimond and Co., Ltd., 17, Acre Lane, Brixton, London, S.W. At Present the range of permissible payloads for which Farrimond trailers are designed is from 1 ton to 20 tons. They are, of course, suitable for combination with tipping gear or other loading or unloading aids, whilst bodies townieet special demands can easily be installed upon the rigidly constructed chassis.

Taking as -a typical example the 5-ton type equipped with 40-in. by 8-in. Dunlop pneumatic tyres, the main frame Consists of two longitudinal channelsteel members which carry wooden. niembers inside them. Another longitudinal -wooden batten runs the full length of the body floor along its centre line. At the front and the rear, the extremities of the frame are tied together by flat steel cross-members, the • connection between the laterals and longitudinals being by means of rivets and angle brackets.

Above the turntable ring there are four channel-steel girders running across the frame, thus giving adequate support around the circumference of the turntable—a very important point.

Above the rear axle _there are two c40 steel longitudinals, to which are anchored the semi-elliptic springs, whilst the anchorages are .braced laterally by the use of 'angle-section members, which also serve as parts of the spare-wheel carrier.

A Compensated Braking System.

Grease points for the use of 'a pressure gun are employed around the turntable, whilst the king pin has a thrust bearing. The brake rope for connecting to the towing vehicle is duplicated for a short length so that it can pass 'around the king pin, in this way making possible brake application whatever may be the angle to which the front wheels are turned for steering purposes. .

This brake rope pulls on to a link coupled to the horizontal hand lever, -which can be operated from the near side when the vehicle Ls not connected to a tractor or lorry. Internal-expandingshoes in large drums in the rear wheelscan be operated, either from the towing vehicle or by the hand. lever

'already mentioned. In both eases a pulley-type compensator comes into action. For adjustment purposes there are five holes in the links coupled to the ends of the camshaft levers. These camshafts are of unusually great length and operate in well-spaced bearings.

%Both front and rear suspension is by semi-elliptic springs, having nine leaves in each, 3 ins. wide. They are pivoted at the front ends; whilst the rear ends are free to slide in guides. The main leaf in each case is turned over forward to form a wearing pad, whilst the second leaf is carried to the full length to give adequate support below the pad. No spring clips are employed.

Hoffmann double-row ball bearings are used in the hubs, which carry steel disc detachable wheels and 40-in. by 8-in. tyres. The price of this trailer with a platform body and plain drawbar is £225.

We understand that a• three-way tipping trailer of 74 tons capacity, mounted on giant pneumatic tyres, is shortly to be available. The tipping gear will be of the single-ram hydraulic type, operated by hand.
