DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT Permanent Secretary Sir Peter Baldwin was scheduled to launch London's first alternative transport system for the disabled this week.
Camden Dial-a-Ride is organised by and for people unable to use buses or Tubes and will serve the estimated 4,500 people with disabilities in the London borough, providing a door-todoor service for the equivalent of public transport fares.
Two radio-controlled vehicles are to be operated on the service which has been developed by a sub-committee of disabled in Camden (DISC) under the chairmanship of Bryan Heiser.
The two vehicles initially used will be a half-ton Talbot van and a Renault Trafic supplied by Camden Council. The service will be run on grants and whatever money it raises by its own means. The Council has supplied an amount of money as well as the vehicles and the Greater London Council has supplied a grant of £24,000.
