THE three main political party leaders have been sent a 56-point " road manifesto ", by the Roads Campaign Council, giving the essential factors of Britain's chronic traffic congestion problems. In addition, every Parliamentary candidate is to receive a copy.
The Council is also sending with the manifesto a special issue of Highway Times to 100,000 readers, who are urged to ask their General Election candidates these three questions:
Are you in favour of applying the Buchanan principles by supporting the construction of primary road networks which need comprise only 5 per cent of the total street mileage of a city to carry 50 per cent of the traffic'?
If elected, will you press for the construction of at least 100.000 off-street parking places a year?
To serve Britain's expanding industry, the ports, week-end and holiday leisure motoring, will you support the experts' plans to add 1,700 miles of national motorways and expressways to the present I.000-mile plan over the next 20 years?
