iWENTY Thornycroft Trusty normal-control six-wheeled oilfield vehicles have been ordered from sport Equipment (Thornycroft), by I.D.E.C.O. [International Dresser leering Co. (Oilfields)] for use in the ntine by Yacimientos Petraferos les. The vehicles are fitted with Is-England combination-type oilfield work and will be employed in eonion with semi-trailers which arc ; built in Italy by the I.D.E.C.O. tees, Nuovo Pignone, who will be ■ ing them direct to the Argentine. .e chassis are basically standard ty models and have a wheelbase of t. 3 in. Power is supplied by a nyeroft QR6 six-cylindered oil le, the gross output of which is 136 . at 2,000 r.p.m., and a four-speed Ant-mesh gearbox is employed in metion with a two-speed auxiliary The auxiliary unit incorporates a make-off drive.
erhead-worm axles are employed in rear bogie, which has two-spring nsion. A Clayton-Dewandre con tinuo us-flow hydraulic servo is fitted to the steering gear and the Clayton Dewandre air-pressure braking system has two separate circuits.
The standard Trusty chassis frame, which has 5/16-in.-thick side members, 11 in. deep, is reinforced by the addition of a second 5/16-in.-thick channel welded inside the main frame in the vicinity of the rear bogie. All wheels carry 110020-in. (14-ply) Dunlop Power Grip tyres.
Hands-England Oilfield Equipment, Ltd., Letchworth, Herts, supplied the
bodywork, specialized equipment and the gravity-cushioned fifth wheel, which stands proud of the decking surface, A full-width 8-in.-diameter loading roller is mounted at the rear of the body.
The equipment includes two 4f-in.
outside-diameter gin poles which can be erected to form a hoist with a lifting capacity of 10,000 lb. This is used in conjunction with a Woodfield Senior 60,000 lb. winch.
A demonstration of the erection and dismantling of the gin pole equipment, conducted by two Thornycroft men, showed that these two operations could be carried out without difficulty in 12+ minutes and 1 p+ minutes respectively. The fully equipped Trusty has an unladen weight of 11 tons 12 cwt. and is rated for operation at a gross train weight of 32 tons. Its maximum speed is 32 m.p.h. with a gradient ability in excess of 1 in 5. A short run over the rough road at the Ilagshot Heath Army proving ground while running .at 20f tons gross solo weight showed the Thornycroft to handle well over all surfaces. The general degree of cab, comfort was high and the ride and controllability were good.
