Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

FOI?. their Mark 2 Pathfinder 4 x 4 pick-up truck Douglas Equipment, Ltd., Cheltenham, have dispensed with the independent suspension used for the original Pathfinder, replacing it with conventional beam axles at the front and rear carried on semi-elliptic springs. The payload rating has been dropped from 35-40 cwt. to 20-25 cwt. and the price has been reduced.

In its original version the Pathfinder has had many applications overseas as a passenger vehicle able to carry a useful payload or tow mobile equipment without modification.

Two power units are offered in the present model. These arc the Commcr 4.1-litre six-cylindered petrol engine producing 91 b.h.p. at 3,100 r.p.m., or the Perkins P6 4.73-litre six-cylindered oil engine with an output of 83 b.h.p. at 2,400 r.p.m. A single dry-ulate clutch is used with both engines. It is 11 in. in diameter with the Commer unit and 12 in. in diameter for the Perkins engine.

Overdrive Available

The constant-mesh main gearbox provides four forward speeds with direct top gear. If required, an overdrive unit, which provides an additional ratio of 0.82 to 1, can be attached to the rear of the normal gearbox housing. It is engaged by a separate lever in the cab.

Drive is taken from the gearbox through an open propeller shaft to the transfer gearbox. This splits the drive to the front and rear axles and provides a high ratio of 1.26 to 1 and low ratio of 2.175 to 1. One-piece shafts connect this box to the axles. The double-reduction rear axle gives an overall ratio of 7.09 to I, whilst the front axle, with a similar ratio, employs spiral-bevel reduction.

The chassis longitudinal members are pressed from 7/32-in.-thick steel. They are 8 in. deep with 2i-in. flanges and the overall width of the frame is 33 in. A vacuum servo is provided for the braking system. Tyres are 9.00 x 16 in. singles at front and rear, Telescopic shock absorbers are fitted at both axles.

All-steel Cab

All-steel construction is employed for the normal-control cab and for the standard pick-up body. Internally the body is 7 ft. 9 in. long, 5 ft. wide and 1 ft. 10 in. deep. It is fitted with tip-up slatted seats for eight persons and incorporates a canvas tilt and drop tailboard.

The vehicle has a wheelbase of 9 ft. 6 in., and is 17 ft. 6 in. long and 6 ft. 3 in. wide overall. Ground clearance is 11 in. on the standard tyres and• the turning circle, similarly equipped, is 42 ft.

Suitable for a gross weight of 8,000 lb., the Pathfinder can exert a maximum tractive effort of 12,300 lb. and is fitted with a pintle-type towing attachment. Both the oiland petrol-engined models have a maximum gradient ability of 1 in 2.

With overdrive ratio fitted the oilengined vehicle has a maximum speed of 37 m.p.h., whilst the petrol-engined version can attain 46 m.p.h. In direct top gear these figures are 31 m.p.h. and 38 m.p.h. respectively.
