'THE new factory of Garner Motors, 1 Ltd., at North Acton Road, Park Royal, London, N.W.10, is a fine, spacious building, well lighted and with central heating, in which two assembly lines are already in operation. The layout permits an increase to three or or even four lines, as the gallery which runs around the interior can be utilized for sub-assembly and the storage of light parts.
The spare-parts service has been centralized at new premises at King's Norton (Birmingham) where comprehensive and rapid service for repairs and overhauls is also available.
The managing director, Mr. G. Lambton Wells, thinks highly of the future of Garner products. The present range consists of 3i-ton, 5-ton and 6-ton vehicles, and a new model will soon be available. The patented system of engine accessibility, in which the cab sides hinge forward, is being used to the fullest advantage, and a number of overseas manufacturers has made inquiries regarding the patents.
Arrangements hare been made to supply Perkins oil engines in lieu of petrol units at the option of buyers. Reasonable adjustments of the chassis prices will, of course, have to be made.
While at the works, we saw a most interesting demonstration of a new comprehensive method of engine, ignition, carburation and exhaust testing, called the Power Prover. This is a complete system devised by the Cities Service Oil Co., Ltd., New Oxford House, Hart Street, London, W.C.1. It measures the percentage of carbon monoxide in the exhaust at any speed and clearly indicates the amount of petrol wasted. By another simple device, the top dead centre is found immediately, a leakage gauge then shows the loss of compression, the points of leakage are ascertained by a stethoscope, and every part of the ignition is checked by a special tester. Spark timing and advance are
observed by a simple stroboscopic method and, finally, carburetter adjustments are made until the Power Prover indicates the most practical cleanliness for the exhaust gases.
Anyone who would like to see this new testing system in operation can do so to-day at the Garner Works. A film of an instructive nature forms part of the demonstration, and shows how the methods employed are utilized to solve a mysterious accident. Incidentally, the instrument used for the picture show is an interesting type known as a film-slide machine. The pictures are shown individually as stills, and are changed to accompany speech records on an amplifier. The Ford Company is using 4,000 of these machines, which are in the hands of their salesmendemonstrators.
Reverting to the Power Prover, arrangements are being made to take this out to fleet owners to diagnose the efficiency of their vehicles.
