Our test driver was told to keep his feet from the pedals when negotiating a steep, rutted and very slippy descent, but dumb instinct took over and the clutch was desperately pushed hard against the floor. Engine and exhaust brake now disabled, the 7.5-tonne 0400 quickly gathered speed down the slope, bouncing the vehicle's minder in the passenger seat as he shrieked for the clutch to be re-engaged.
When this simple instruction was followed, the Unimog soon found its feet again, the tyres getting a decent enough purchase on the slope in a moment. Happily back in control, the Unitise gave us a very calm and controlled ride to the bottom oi the slope despite the alarrokig start Most Unimog driversvrill have more off-road seem than this; nevertheiess the test demonstrates how much the machinE S capable of— in the right hazels.
