• Prison sentences impose( on Humberside haulier Alan Blakey and his son Simon ha been quashed by the Court c Appeal. An order that each should pay 22,000 towards tl costs of the prosecution case at their trial in February halm also been set aside.

Alan Blakey, a director of Maicihaul (Humberside), Roawest Transport, and McDermott Movements; and Simon Blakey, the company secretary, were found guilty February at Grimsby Crown Court of allegedly conspiring falsely obtain insurance COVel by falsely representing the si of their fleet and the identity vehicles. Alan Blakey was sentenced to three months ir prison, with a further nine months suspended. Simon Blakey was sentenced to ninl months imprisonment, suspended for two years (CM 11 22 February).

At the appeal, Christopher Holland QC, for the Blakeys, claimed there were material irregularities in the conduct c the trial which robbed the Blakeys of the chance of acquittal.

In quashing the conviction: Lord Justice Lloyd, sitting wi Mr Justice Borehani and Mr Justice Potts, held that the c ticism was well founded, and that the convictions were un. satisfactory and unsafe.
