As less than 10% of buses ir the T&W area currently meet the DPTAC standard there will be a planned five-year phasingin period. • There is nothing new about truck salesmen using lap-top computers, but Volvo's latest system is ahead of the pack. It does far more than work out the right price (with all the fiddly bits included) and the basic specification. Before your eyes it will design and draw the truck you need, work out how much it will cost to run per week, per month or per mile, and even tell you exactly what body you require and where and how that bodywork should be fitted to the chassis.
Volvo Trucks GB is busy persuading its dealers to equip senior sales staff with them.
The programs run on a Toshiba portable PC and the system is simple and quick to use. There are three main programs. The first is a detailed chassis specification and pricing program written in Sweden by a working salesman to he as "user-friendly" as possible. Second is an operatingcost program called the "Volvo truck transport economy calculation". This will work out in detail how much a specified truck will cost (see figures).
Finally, there is a Britishdesigned program for bodybuilders, called the "Volvo customised superstructure system" VCSS) which will digest a laulier's requirements and tell tirn what sort of body he leeds for the job. The program works out what the dimensions ;hould be, where and how the tiody should be fitted to the chassis, and the location of the iehicle's centre of gravity heore drawing up the finished nodel on a portable printer, vhich the Volvo salesman can ilso take around with him.
So what is the advantage of ill this jiggery-pokery to the iverage transport manager or leet engineer?
