Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• CV fleet operators are not making enough use of auctions to get the best residual values, according to George Gamesby, manager of Central Motor Auctions' Maltby, Middlesborough branch.

He sees car auctioneering as a major growth activity, as an increasing number of fleet operators and dealers come to appreciate the special services modern auctions can provide. These include collection and delivery, valuation and valeting, specialised sales, computerised price analysis and trends, and prompt payment.

"Yet why don't more HGV operators make use of our facilities to a similar extent?" he asks. Gamesby believes that too many fleet operators take what seems to be the easy route to dispose of their redundant vehicles and plant equipment. "In other words, they tend to accept trade-in terms when replacing their fleets without really researching the best residual prices they could achieve — which is at auctions where entries are sold in competition to an interested attendance of people who have come to bid and buy."

CMA holds regular commercial sales at six of its nine centres. In addition to Maltby — where sales are held on the second Monday in each month at llam — these are at Sheri shed in the Midlands; Rothwen, near Leeds; Dursley, Gloucestershire; Glasgow an Manchester.

Due to a transport reorgr nisation programme, Manchester-based Thomas Maxted and Sons is to auctio off more than 30 commercial vehicles and trailers.

The sale will be run by CMA's On-Site Customer At tion division at Maxted's Ira ford Park base on Saturday November at 1 lam.

On offer will be a selectior of Daf 2100 Turbos on E, D, and B plates; all 4x 2s with sleeper cabs.

They will be followed by Abram Boafloy Bedford pantechnicons with 500 and 330 engines and a 1976 Ford 01311 Luton box van. Traile will include York curtainsider and box vans, and Craven Boma!lay and Crane Fruehat box vans.
