BY ADDING the G230 and G290 tractive units (CM, October 19) to its UK product range, Renault Truck Industries is now competing for an increased share of a much broader section of the market.

RTI expects that its G290 British-built flagship will have the greatest impact because of its high power-toweight ratio and competitive kerb weight.

The G290, distinguishable from its G-range stablemates by the new high-roof GT sleeper cab, will be marketed in both 4x2 and t,x2 configurations similar to existing G260 models.

Like all two-axled G-range tractive units, the largest G290 17T1) model has a 3.3m or 3.6m wheel base and weighs in at 5,902kg or 6,073kg. It can be plated at 28,32.5 or 38 tonnes GCW.

Both twin-steer models have similar 3.82m outer axle spreads, but at 7.414 kg, the

top-of-the-range G290 22TI) is 57kg heavier.

Renault fits G290s with the turbocharged and chargecooled MIDR 062045 in-line six-cylinder engine which delivers 214kW (287hp) at 2,10Orpm and a maximum 1,176Nm (867 Rift) of torque at 1,30Orpm in accordance with EEC standards.

The 1318 18-speed rangechange and splitter gearbox is standard on the G290 and G260, but the 139 nine-speed box is optional on 4x2 versions. An identical 430min diameter DTP 2400 air-assisted clutch, similar to that in the R310, is also used.

All G-range tractive units use Renault's Pt 14113 hypoid rear axle which is rated at 11,6(X) kg. The standard ratio on G290 and G260 models is 5.125:1 with 5.86:1 and 6.83:1 options for both the 1118 and B9 gearboxes. An extra• 4.556:I is offered with the latter. Front and rear suspension is by parabolic leaf springs and anti-roll bars. The York suspended intermediate axle on 6x2 versions uses two-leaf semi-elliptics and air suspension with a load transfer device.

Renault's steel UT cab with its GRP high-roof capping is 170min higher than the standard height G-cab.

The smaller G230 17T1) 4x2 sleeper-cabbed tractive unit has been introduced to meet general haulage needs at 28 tonnes to 32.52 tonnes GCW but can be plated up to 37 tonnes GCW.

It is powered by the MIDS 062030 turbocharged six-cylinder engine, producing 169kW (227hp) at 2,400rpm and 756Nin (564 lbft) of torque at 1,50Orpm.

Renault's BDSLI32R 11speed synchromesh gearbox with its 0.80:1 top gear is matched to the 6.31:1 standard ratio hypoid rear axle. With its 2:1 huh reduction and fitted with 11R22.5 tyres, the G230 has a geared top speed of 109km/h. Optional 5.64 and 6.83:1 ratios are available.

With standard sleeper cabs, the 3.3m and 3.6m wheelbase G230 models have kerb weights of 5,558 kg and 5,729kg. Optional day cabs are 95kg lighter.

The G170 16-tonner is now oft.ered with an optional 6.3m wheelbase to accommodate a 7.3m body behind a sleeper cab.

A drawbar package has been introduced at 26 tonne gcw.
