EFFORTS to control the novement and parking of :oaches around London's Vicoria coach station have been )locked by the Government.

Junior Transport Minister, ._,ord Caithness told peers luring the report stage of the fransport Bill that the Govmunent is not prepared at his stage to take action, for a variety of reasons.

For a start, it is not clear whether Westminster City Council needs additional powers to tackle the problem.

He pointed out the the Government has commissioned two studies — to be completed before Christmas — on the scope for using publicly-owned land outside local authority control for extra off-street parking facilities.

And London Regional Transport is investigating the need for additional terminal facilities for long-distance coaches.

Lord Caithness said Westnnnster City Cuncil had already indicated the measures the Government plans to take around Victoria, and the Department of Transport is helping by agreeing in principle to a special road sign to be used to ban all coaches from a given street.
