YEARS of decline in the use of Strathclyde PTE's Glasgow city bus services were arrested in the year to March 31 when it also cut its heavy engineering costs.
The SPTE annual report for 1984/85 shows its buses carried 134.5 million passengers, the same number as in 1983/84, and that the total number of passengers carried on its directly-operated public transport increased from 146.8 million to 147.2 million thanks to further additional business on its underground railway.
Revenue support for the bus service increased from 16.8 per cent (£8.6 million) in 1983/84 to 18.7 per cent (£10.2 million) in 1984/85, and the total operating cost of the service rose from £1.86 per mile to £1.88.
But, thanks probably to the closure of three surplus garages during the year, the repairs and maintenance element of the costs fell from 58p per mile to 51p.
