• The US Environmental Protection Agency has completed the first of its major tasks called for in the Noise Control Act of 1972 by publishing a Criteria Document on Effects of Noise. The Agency is proposing regulations to control noise emission from "interstate motor carriers".
The Criteria Document is a scientific discussion of the cuase and effect relationships associated with response to noise by humans, animals and property.
The proposed regulations will apply to all vehicles over, 4.46 tons gvw and will require such vehicles not to exceed 90dBA at 50ft when the vehicle is travelling at over 35 mph. Similarly at under 35 mph, except on level city-street operations, the maximum is 86dBA; on level street conditions the maximum is 80dBA.
So far as smoke is concerned a visual inspection procedure is proposed.
It is proposed that the regulations will become effective on October 11974.
