Redundant drivers claim more pay

• Seventeen lorry drivers formerly working for Storefreight (Northern) Ltd, Dunston-on-Tyne, which closed down in August, are claiming higher redundancy payments. An Industrial Tribunal at Newcastle on Tyne heard the case of one man, but adjourned the others indefinitely.
Mr Raymond Cannon, of Felling, claimed that although he had been working up to 60 hours weekly, his redundancy payment was based on £24 for a 40hr week. He said he had sometimes started work at 5 am and on long-distance runs was away from home at night. Mr W. Kelman, managing director, said that Cannon had started work on most days between 7 and 8 am and as a day-time driver was often home at night. He worked a 40hr week as specified in his contract. He was regularly asked to do overtime, but this was not compulsory. The Tribunal's decision will be announced later.
