UK? Nonsense
• Reports that the Government has given up its battle with the EEC to restrict the size of lorries on British roads have brought a vigorous denial from Mr John Peyton, Minister for Transport Industries.
The EEC proposal is for vehicles with an 11-tonne maximum axle weight and a 40-tonne overall weight; Britain wants limits of 10 and 32 tons respectively.
Describing statements that the Government was about to agree to the European figures as without foundation, Mr Peyton said: "Of course, if the Commission were to put up a reasonable plan, we would look at it, because we do not want to take up a high, dogmatic position.
"But to suggest that we are about to agree to the 11-tonne axle proposal, which is at the heart of the controversy, is nonsense".
