drivers and over 12,000 conductors qualified in 1961 for awards made by the Road Operators' Safety Council. Awards to drivers include 9,741 Central bus (and trolleybus) men, 2,079 Country bus and coach drivers, and 252. drivers of lorries, vans and other vehicles.
For the first time, a Gold Cross award for 40 years' safe driving was gained. This was awarded to 62-year-old Mr. H. Chaplin, of the Chiswick lorry depot. London Transport's conductors have become eligible for the first time in the Conductors Award of Merit Competition. First-year certificates in this section have been gained by 10,270 Central bus men and women, and by 1,852 Country bus and coach conductors.
More One-Man Buses
THE Western Welsh Omnibus Co., Ltd., is planning to introduce oneman buses on routes in the West Wales area from December 3 as another part of its economy measures in rural areas.
In July the company announced cuts in bus services in rural areas, which are expected to save a total mileage of 350,000 a year. In 1961. it operated about 35 per cent of its mileage below cost, and at the end of March this year it had increased to 48 per cent. In some of the areas where cuts were made the company had been losing so much money that it had considered surrendering its licences.
South Shields Profit Up DURING the year ended March 31, the
transport undertaking of South Shields Corporation earned a surplus of £5,407 against £489 the previous year. The improved position was due to higher fares which came into operation in August, 1961.
