Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE engine and gearbox developed for the new Reliant Regal 3/25 threewheeled car are to be used in the Reliant 5-cwt. van. Body styling of the van is unchanged, but will be brought into line with that of • the new car model eventually.

Main feature of the new engine, which is a four-cylinder o.h.v. unit, is the use of light alloy for the cylinder head and block and crankcase. Removable cast-iron wet liners are employed and the valve seat inserts are Of sintered iron, Capacity of the engine is 600 c.c., bore and stroke dimensions being 56 mm. (2.2 in.) and 58 mm. (2,4 in.) respectively and maximum power output is 242 ti.b.p. at 5,250 r.p.rn. Compression ratio is 7.8 to 1.

Apart from the use of light alloy for the block and head, the engine is. completely conventional. Lubrication is by a

submerged vane-type oil pump which delivers oil under pressure to the three crankshaft main bearings and thence to the camshaft bearings. Oilways drilled in the crankshaft web take oil to the bigend bearings, gudgeon-pin bearings and cylinder s walls being splash lubricated. Oil is also fed to the hollow rocker shaft for lubrication of the valve gear. Oil capacity of the sump is seven pints.

Drive to the oil pump is taken from the camshaft by skew gearing, the opposite end of the shaft providing the drive for the ignition distributor. The camshaft is chain driven from the crankshaft and the tappets bear directly in the light-alloy cylinder block. The dynamo 'and water pump are belt driven from the crankshaft pulley. The fuel system incorporates a Solex downdraught carburetter and an A.C. petrol pump operated from the camshaft. The engine drives through a Borg and Beck single-dry-plate clutch to the new gearbox. This is a four-speed unit with synchromesh on the upper three ratios. Helical gears are used, these being finished by shaving instead of burnishing as on the previous design. Gear ratios of 428, 2.47, 1.45 and 1 to 1 forward and 5.49 to I reverse are given.

The engine and gearbox are mounted as a unit at three points in the chassis through rubber supports.
