Liam Quinn of Quinns Transport has a letter in CM this week outlining his plans for world domination. As far as I'm concerned, if we're going to give control to someone, giving it to a man from Yorkshire who has been a haulier all his life isn't a bad idea.
His points could be seen as radical by some (see page 16), but whoever said 'don't waste a good crisis' was on to something. Read CM's pages this week and you will see just how quickly the industry is changing — and not necessarily for the better.
We'd always planned to take an in-depth look into CVAs (see page 14) this week: they are a phenomenon that has gained prominence in road transport in recent years as a means of restructuring the finances of struggling firms. Opinions are split. Those who use them say they aren't entered into lightly, and that they save jobs. Others see them as a means of propping up businesses that haven't performed and should fail.
I'm not saying the country should fail, but we have to question the way we work. After all, business failures are a vital part of the cycle that creates opportunity for new businesses to flourish.
If we use this moment of malaise as a chance for change, I'd like to think that a haulier from Yorkshire started it all... Christopher Walton
