Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• South Crofty tin mine at Camborne, Cornwall has been given a reprieve resulting in continued work for hauliers in an area which has been badly hit by the recession (CM 28 Feb-6 March).

South Crofty was due to close, like the Wheal Jane mine at Truro, but a resurgence in tin prices meant that the mine was shut for only three days.

Mark Richards, a director at I3odmin-based haulier Richards & Osborne, says it is now shifting less tonnage than before and it no longer gets paid for loading ore because this is done by machinery "but we have not had to get rid of any of our 35 lorries because we have found other work," says Richards.

However, Richards says that the general situation is "bleak."
