• Using trucks instead of trains has helped the Royal Mail to deliver 85% of first class letters within a day.
The figure — the Royal Mail's best-ever — is 7.4% up on last year. It says that moving from predominantly rail to road distribution has improved efficiency. Among recent changes it has started to use trucks to move mail from the south of England to northbound railway stations, with a similar set up in the other direction.
