• Derbyshire-based haulier FB Atkins has formed an association with NYK Line, a Japanese shipping and transport operation, to bid for haulage business from the giant Toyota car plant which is under construction opposite Atkins' site.
Director Ken Atkins released the news to CM to dispel industry rumours that his longestablished family firm was about to be sold to a Japanese transport and shipping giant. The association with NYK allows the joint development of warehousing and distribution services for companies in the area, says Atkins, who stresses that the tie-up with NYK is not a merger. Atkins reports that the firm's container haulage business is "extremely busy" because of the collapse of so many local haulage firms. As a result his firm is adding 13 Renault G290 tractors to its fleet to meet demand.
They are the first new trucks the company has bought for two years. "In early 1989 we felt uneasy and decided not to buy new vehicles for a while — now we're very thankful that we did not," says Atkins.
