Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• ERF has broken the Cummins monopoly of its lighter rigid models by deciding to specify the most powerful Perkins Phaser engine for its E6 trucks.

The charge-cooled Phaser 210Ti is offered as an alternative to the equivalent Cummins 6BTAA210 unit which was introduced last year (CM 19-25 April 1990). Like the Cumminspowered E6, the six-litre Perkins model will use Eaton's 6109 synchro box with a Rockwell drive axle, and will be offered as either a 17-tonne rigid and tipper 4x2 chassis as well as a 21-tonne drawbar version.

Although ERF says that it currently has no plans to use the Phaser in any other of its power ratings, its adoption achieves two main objectives.

Firstly, it spreads the policy of using Cummins and Perkins as dual suppliers further down the weight range (ERF already offers the Eagle Tx as an alternative to Cununins engines in its multi-wheelers and tractors); and secondly, it brings ERF in line with AWD, Foden and Seddon Atkinson who all use the Phaser in their 17-tonners.
