Nickson whose lightning reflexes and outstanding driving skill helped him avert a serious crash while driving the Cambridge City soccer team home from a match in Dudley.
He managed to pull the Premier Travel coach out of the path of an oncoming car on to the grass verge.
Cambridge City manager Bill L,eivers was the first to praise the driver. "It was one of the best bits of driving that ever got us out of trouble" he said, somewhat cryptically.
39 year-old Nickson of Haverhill was the reluctant hero and described the hairraiser as "all part of a day's work".
He admitted though that "had there been no grass verge there would have been deaths".
