Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Bus subsidies in Shropshire are likely to rise by around £350,000 this year, says the county council's public transport committee chairman Keith Harrison. "This is a result of de-regulation and the withdrawal of Midland Red North from 64 of the county's routes," he says. "These have now been put out to tender and are largely being taken up by smaller firms — but with a subsidy."

The 2350,000 is the difference between the £650,000 paid in subsidies last year and the £1 million which is due to be spent this year to keep the buses running.

The extra costs will be incurred, Harrison says, in funding the administrative switchover, providing new bus stops and setting up an information service to replace that previously offered by Midland Red travel offices, which are now under threat.
