THE JUSTIFICATION for the introduction of the new Mercedes-Benz petrol vehicles could be regarded as an indictment of Government fiscal policy, which, on the basis of the maker's calculations, gives them an economic edge over the more frugal diesel-engined models up to about 40,000 miles.
According to Alan Grigg, product marketing manager, commercial vehicles, the diesel models consistently yield up to 30mpg whereas the petrol vans are expected to cover 21-23 miles on a gallon of the fuel that the Government is supposed to be so anxious to conserve.
I must say, however, that the petrol models are a pleasure to drive —and blow the fuel bills.
